Urine is one of the most common samples used for evaluating one’s health condition. It is an important diagnostic tool nowadays. The urine collection method has a significant role in getting the acquired clinical information. Many patients make mistakes while collecting their urine samples. That results in abnormal results later on.

You might be confused on what’s the proper way to collect a urine sample. Among many ways, the clean catch method is the widely used way for urinalysis. For your information, here, we will know about this method to collect a urine sample.

What is a Clean Catch Urine Sample?

Clean catch urine sample is an effective procedure for urine culture. The method is designed to prevent the germs from entering the penis or vagina while taking the sample of urine. Hence, there remains no chance of urine sample contamination. And so, you get an accurate result from the urine sample test.

The most common reason for getting a clean catch urine sample is urinary tract infection (UTI). Pain or burning, as well as a persistent urge to urinate happens because of urinary tract infection. If you have any sign of disease like kidney issue or previous medical record of kidney damage, your health care provider may order a urine culture to observe your health condition.

How Do You Collect Clean Catch Urine Sample?

Initially, you may get a clean catch kit, which includes a plastic container with a lid. There will be a label on which you can put your name, and a moist towel that is separately wrapped.

It’s critical to obtain a urine sample in the middle of the process. That means you should begin urinating and then stop. Place the collection container under your genital area and then let your flow of urine normally once again. Read the following steps to collect the urine sample properly:

Collecting the Urine Sample

  • Firstly, wash your hands properly.
  • Then, remove the sterile container from the package and, if one is given, put your name on the label.
  • Females should clean their vulva and perianal areas with a wet, moistened towel from front to back.
  • Repeat the above process with a second moist towel.
  • Males should withdraw the foreskin from the penis and clean the penis from tip to base using the provided cloth.
  • Replace the second towel and repeat the process.
  • Females should then spread their labia and urinate into the toilet with one hand.
  • With the other hand, place the special container under the genital area to catch the flow of urine without being in touch with the skin.
  • Males should retract the foreskin with one hand and begin urinating in the toilet. Then, place the urine container with the other hand to catch the stream of urine without contacting any skin.
  • Fill the sterile container only halfway with pee.
  • While you finish urinating into the toilet, place the lid on the specimen container and set it on the sink or somewhere secure.

Storing the Urine Sample

If you are unable to submit your urine sample to the health care provider within 1 hour, place it in a sealed plastic bag and preserve it in the refrigerator at 4°C. It should not be kept for more than a 24 hour period.

If the urine sample is not refrigerated properly, the germs in it can grow. As a result, it might have an impact on the test results.
